Ogólnie postępujące zrozumienie środowisk i procesów peryglacjalnych skutkuje rozróżnieniem dużej różnorodności procesów zachodzących w różnych warunkach środowiskowych i klimatycznych. Pomaga to z kolei scharakteryzować konkretne typy środowisk i warunków peryglacjalnych. Należy podejmować wysiłki w celu zwiększenia zrozumienia procesów peryglacjalnych. Jednak nowe wyzwania dla badań peryglacjalnych pojawiają się, gdy wpływ zmian klimatycznych na środowisko peryglacjalne musi zostać oszacowany dokładniej. Nowoczesne techniki pomiaru właściwości fizycznych zamarzających i rozmarzających gruntów oraz pozyskiwania i zarządzania danymi otwierają nowe perspektywy osiągnięcia tych celów.
