Research on cave sediments in Dziadowa Skała

Abstract

The sediments in the cave known as Dziadowa Skała in the Kraków Upland (Zawiercie County), were excavated to a depth of 6 metres without reaching the floor. The cave sediments are predominantly periglacial in nature. They feature periglacial congelifluction structures and contain a frost wedge. Two series of these sediments were distinguished that are separated by a layer formed during the last interglacial. Three cultural levels containing archaeological artefacts indicating the earlier Palaeolithic were identified in the interglacial formation. Above, in the ceiling of the Pleistocene cave sediments, a cultural layer containing Upper Palaeolithic artefacts was discovered.
