Po inwentaryzacji lodowców pogrzebanych i powierzchniowych oraz lodowców skalnych, na obszarze ponad 12 000 km² wysokich kordylierów i prekordylierów, a także po analizie literatury światowej, określono różne typy lodowców skalnych w fazach aktywnej, nieaktywnej i kopalnej. Wysokie Andy, z ich zimnym i suchym klimatem, intensywnym dziennym promieniowaniem przychodzącym i nocnym promieniowaniem wychodzącym, z wietrzeniem skał w materiały blokowe, ze stromą topografią będącą konsekwencją deglacjacji, a także warunkami deglacjacji, zapewniają idealne środowisko do powstawania lodowców skalnych. Lodowce skalne są poligenetyczne: w wyniku deglacjacji i w konsekwencji idealnych warunków akumulacji gruzu i śniegu. Istnieją lodowce skalne, które poruszają się bardzo szybko: „lodowce skalne”. Lodowce skalne są uważane za facje „podziemnego lodowca górskiego” suchych, zimnych regionów geokriogenicznych, które odpowiadają facji „odkrytego lodu” z obszarów o większych opadach śniegu. Przedstawiono wstępny diagram rozmieszczenia aktywnych i czwartorzędowych lodowców skalnych wzdłuż Andów i półkuli południowej. Wskazano na znaczenie lodowców skalnych z punktu widzenia hydrologicznego i paleoklimatologicznego.
