Abstract

This study examines the influence of slope aspect on gradient, fossil mass movement features, and snow patch erosion in the Esk valley, north-east Yorkshire. Nivation benches are best developed on northeast- and northwest-facing slopes and resistant sandstone outcrops, formed by prolonged snow cover and freeze–thaw activity. Fossil landslides and debris flows reflect lithological control under periglacial conditions. Slope angle varies with aspect, elevation and climatic factors, particularly insolation and wind.
