Features of the geographical environment of periglacial areas in the light of paleobotanical data

The Pleistocene periglacial zone was characterized by a unique flora, unmatched in any existing plant community. Analyses of pollen profiles from periglacial deposits in the European part of the Soviet Union have revealed the nature of this vegetation. It comprises forest-steppe and forest-tundra, with herbaceous plants predominating over woody plants. Studies have demonstrated floristic similarities between the periglacial periods of the last and penultimate glaciations. The distinct climatic characteristics of the periglacial zone have been confirmed by paleobotanical data.
