The periglacial landforms that still dominate the morphological landscape of the Holy Cross Mountains region were reshaped during the Quaternary period. Among the systems active during this time – glacial, periglacial and humid temperate morphogenesis – it was the repeatedly occurring periglacial morphogenesis that caused the greatest changes in the relief inherited from the Tertiary. This is evidenced by the presence of at least three congelifluction levels within the slope covers, superimposed in a stepped arrangement. In the valley deposits, two accumulative terrace levels can be distinguished that are genetically linked to equiplanation processes active during the last two periglacial periods. Under periglacial conditions of the last glaciation, a distinct differentiation of morphogenetic processes occurred that depended on the topography of the terrain. The same differentiation also appeared over time, as indicated by the alternating stratigraphic sequence of the slope deposits.
