Abstract

The paper discusses the origin and distribution of castle koppies and tors – distinctive landforms of the Bohemian Highland. These features occur mainly in igneous rocks (granite, syenite) but also in metamorphic and sedimentary formations. Two genetic models are proposed: a two-stage model involving deep chemical weathering in a hot, humid Tertiary climate followed by Pleistocene exhumation, and a one-stage model combining concurrent weathering and removal of regolith under periglacial conditions. The study presents detailed morphological examples and emphasises the role of periglacial processes and cryoplanation in shaping tors and castle koppies during the Pleistocene.
