Chronological problems of the patterned soils of Hungary

The paper presents a study on the chronology of patterned (cryoturbated) soils in Hungary. The author analyses the distribution and structure of frost-related features in deposits ranging from the Lower Pleistocene to the Late Würm. Although most cryoturbations in Central Europe date from the last glaciation, older forms from the Riss and Mindel periods also occur in Hungary. Pécsi identifies characteristic features – polygonal, wedge-shaped and sac-like deformations – correlated with distinct river terrace levels. Based on lithostratigraphic and palaeopedological data, he establishes a chronological succession of cryoturbation phenomena and suggests their application in determining the relative age of sediments and landforms in periglacial regions.
