Kopalne grunty strukturalne (poligony i pasy) występują powszechnie we wschodniej Anglii. Wyróżniają się dużymi rozmiarami i odwzorowaniem współczesnej roślinności. W celu odsłonięcia struktur podziemnych wykonano odkrywki reprezentatywnych form. Poligony składają się z powierzchniowych materiałów pokrywowych (piasków eolicznych lub gruzu soliflukcyjnego) zalegających w płaskodennych zagłębieniach utworzonych z materiałów kredowych. Pasy są bardzo podobne. Omówiono pochodzenie tych struktur. Stwierdzono, że formy te zasadniczo różnią się od wielokątów kamiennych itp. i nie można ich powiązać z żadnymi obecnymi wzorami arktycznymi. Znanych jest około 500 lokalizacji, a wszystkie ograniczają się do materiałów kredowych i wschodniej części kraju. Wskazano, że kopalne grunty strukturalne powstały w czasie ostatniego zlodowacenia, lecz niektóre z nich mogły przetrwać nawet od końca zlodowacenia Gipping (Saale).
