Some remarks about changes in the nomenclature applied in the Russian literature

As a result of the argument which has been going on for several years in the USSR on the problem of scientific terms in cryopedology, some changes have been introduced into the formerly used terminology. There is a tendency to discard older designations and to replace them by new ones closely corresponding to the notion in question. These changes concern the following terms: merzlota (frozen ground), suhaya merzlota (dry frozen ground), vechnaya merzlota (perennially frozen ground), sezonnaya merzlota (seasonally frozen ground), degradacya merzloty (degradation of frozen ground), deyatelny sloy (active layer), nulevaya zavesa (zero screen, freezing point), merzlotuvedenye (cryopedology).
