In September 1958, an international symposium on periglacial geomorphology was held in Poland under the IGU Commission. Participants from 13 countries discussed the classification of periglacial phenomena, terminology and the development of a global periglacial map. The programme included field sessions showcasing Poland's periglacial landforms.
