Catastrophe and crises: climate, plague, "crash"

Climate catastrophe and crises such as pandemics and economic collapses have long attracted the interest of literary and cultural scientists. We are waiting for texts on new phenomena in culture and literature caused or inspired by phrases such as the crises mentioned. We are interested in both historical, literary and ecocritical texts. They may consider the nature and place of man in it, as well as descriptions of new phenomena related to the crisis of the pandemic and the rapid digitalization of many areas of life.

Biography as a "blurry" genre

The 2nd issue of the issue of "The Problems of Literary Genres" for 2021 will be devoted to exploring the literary genre: biography. Currently, we are observing a revival of interest in this subject in relation to new cultural circumstances, which manifest themselves in the progress and popularity of the biography genre.

We are interested in explorations of variations in, and to, the biographical genre; its hybridity and "blurring" with other genres (e.g. autobiography, reportage, fictional forms); the question of whether biographies "contaminate" other kinds of genres with their features; categories of authenticity, objectivity and engagement concerning biography; reasons for the popularity of biographical forms and media methods of their presentation; also cognitive perspectives, authoring, publishing and critical strategies and the contexts of their reception in an increasingly dynamically developing area of biography.

Epistolography as a challenge

We are currently experiencing a growing interest in epistolography in the humanities. Reflection on the content and form of letters opens up new ways of explaining and understanding not only biographs and history, but also social and philosophical transformations. The letter, as one of the oldest genres, is a multi-threaded issue. Therefore, we are waiting for texts to be submitted which: describe its transformations; show perspectives including references to the fundamental theory of Stefania Skwarczyńska's letter, as well as to the latest research on the autobiographization of correspondence; which studies the problem of self-creation and the image of the author; and which illuminates the interaction between epistolography and literature.

We are open to original discussions of both published correspondence and innovative readings of archival letters (descriptions of wider phenomena, not case studies). We are also interested in the contexts of editorial decisions made by publishers who publish the private correspondence of writers, philosophers and scientists. Moreover, we will be interested in all cultural initiatives of writing letters, which are a significant manifestation of reading activity. We also recommend open letters, which are a testimony of commitment to the problems of the modern world, such as the defense of human rights or the protection of animals.
