The process of institutionalizing bare-knuckle fights: from street fights to global events

Bare-knuckle fights are now a global social phenomenon. The aim of this article is to present the process of institutionalisation of bare-knuckle boxing and its social legitimisation. This type of fighting has a social history — from its popularity in emerging industrial societies, through a period of existence within the criminal underworld, to its re-emergence among mainstream combat sports. The article focuses on the path that bare-knuckle boxing has taken to now filling large sports arenas and be broadcast worldwide. The process of institutionalization has been accompanied by processes typical of capitalist societies and known from other sports disciplines: commercialization, professionalization, and mediatization. The paper also includes a comparative context with mixed martial arts (MMA) and the Polish version of bare-knuckle boxing. The analysis draws on the concepts of institutionalization by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann [1983].
