The aim of the study is to identify diversity in presentations of gender in Slovak folk songs. The starting point is the study of the relation between language and society. The corpus under research consists of 1000 songs included in a songbook. Attention is paid to motifs related to women and men, for example personal feelings, the relationship between women and men, promiscuity, adultery, drinking, physical violence, travelling, education etc. The research has shown that folk songs create certain stereotypes of femininity and masculinity. However, genders are not presented as opposites, but as complementary.
