BETWEEN LITERATURE AND BOTANY: MICHAEL MARDER’S CONCEPT OF “GRAFTING” TEXTS AND ITS APPLICATION IN THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS

Abstract

This article examines how Ursula Zajączkowska’s heterogeneous prose serves as an exam­ple of text “grafting”, as conceptualized by Michael Marder. The theoretical framework of the study, outlined in the first section, draws from critical plant studies, which explore all hybrid forms of thinking and writing about vegetal organisms. Subsequently, Kraj describes one such theoretical framework: the theory of textual and conceptual “grafting”, proposed by Michael Marder, a prominent figure in plant humanities. This concept is applied practically in the third section, where Kraj examines how Zajączkowska’s essay collection, Patyki, badyle [Tweaks, Weeds], cognitively enriches botanical discourse by grafting specific literary strategies onto it.

Cet article vise à illustrer comment la prose hétérogène d’Urszula Zajączkowska sert
d’exemple de « greffe » textuelle, telle qu’elle a été conceptualisée par Michael Marder. Le cadre théorique de l’étude, présenté dans la première section, s’inspire des études critiques sur les plantes, qui explorent toutes les formes hybrides de pensée et d’écriture sur les organismes végétaux. Je décris ensuite l’un de ces cadres théoriques : la théorie de la « greffe » de texte et de pensée, proposée par Michael Marder, figure éminente des sciences humaines axées sur les plantes. Ce concept est appliqué de manière pratique dans la troisième section, où je montre comment le recueil d’essais d’Urszula Zajączkowska, Patyki, badyle [Bâtons, tiges], enrichit cognitivement le discours botanique en y greffant des stratégies littéraires spécifiques.
