POETRY SLAM AS A FORM OF LITERARY ENGAGEMENT: SLAM PERFORMANCES IN LIGHT OF UN SUSTAINABLE GROWTH GOALS

Abstract

In the 1980s, slam poetry emerged, transcending the boundaries of print and academic evaluation, to become a global literary movement. Within thirty years, slam poetry evolved from a local artistic gathering in Chicago to an international platform, supported by multilateral projects carried out in non-institutional circles, often by non-governmental organizations like the World Poetry Slam Organization. Slam poetry has been developing as a tool for social reflection and civic engagement. Given that the genre operates outside cultural institutions and academia, its study requires consideration of the social context: the diversity of aesthetics, the skills of the creators, and the wide range of topics they address. Slam poems not only express individual experiences but also reflect social and cultural contexts, demanding an informed research approach based on “listening and observing”, or active participation in the creative process by interacting with the creator and the material during a slam tournament. The aim of the article is to analyze slam statements from three tournaments – the National Slam Poetry Championships (Poznań, Poland), the Coupe du Monde de Slam de Poésie (Paris, France), and the World Poetry Slam Championship (Brussels, Belgium) – taking into account social themes collected within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the global tasks facing countries and their inhabitants that may improve the quality of life by 2030.

Dans les années 1980, le phénomène de la poésie slam est apparu, dépassant les frontières de la littérature imprimée et de l’évaluation académique pour devenir un mouvement littéraire mondial. En moins de trente ans, la poésie slam est passée d’un simple rassemblement artistique local à Chicago à une plateforme à portée internationale, soutenue par des projets multilatéraux menés dans des cercles non institutionnels, souvent par l’intermédiaire d’organisations non gouvernementales telles que la World Poetry Slam Organisation. La poésie slam se développe comme un outil de réflexion sociale et d’engagement civique. La poésie slam fonctionnant en dehors des institutions culturelles et universitaires, son étude nécessite la prise en compte du contexte social, de la diversité des esthétiques, des compétences des créateurs et du large éventail de sujets abordés. Les poèmes slam n’expriment pas seulement des expériences individuelles, mais reflètent également des contextes sociaux et culturels, exigeant une approche de recherche consciente basée sur « l’écoute et l’observation », autrement dit la participation active au processus créatif, en interagissant avec le créateur et le matériel lors d’un tournoi de slam. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser les performances slamés de trois tournois : le Championnat national de poésie slam (Poznań, Pologne), la Coupe du Monde de Slam de Poésie (Paris, France) et le World Poetry Slam Championship (Bruxelles, Belgique), en tenant compte des thèmes sociaux recensés dans le cadre des objectifs de développement durable des Nations unies – ces tâches globales fixées pour les nations et leurs habitants, et qui sont susceptibles d’influencer l’amélioration de leur qualité de vie d’ici 2030.
